THE typical high E string on an electric guitar is a stainless steel filament 32 inches long and one-hundredth of an inch thick. It weighs perhaps as much as a few paper clips — not a lot of raw material, but enough for the Barenaked Ladies to concern themselves with on their recent North American tour, which conclude

Local Artists' "Room" at Another Look Books?

Michael and I were discussing new ideas for the bookstore and were wondering how a local artists' room at the bookstore would go over? Due to limited space we thought we would offer each artist space for 1 or 2 items, but also considered setting up a section of the bookstore's website as an "electronic portfolio" for each artist. This would allow shoppers the ability to see more of a particular artist's work etc.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw the idea out there to see what grows. I think it's sad that we don't currently have a place to showcase the fabulous talent here.

Feedback please. - Colette

America's Sad Song

I'm not sure if sadness, or disgust is most responsible for this letter. As the news from Lebanon continues to filter in, I can't help but wonder if America's song has gotten so sad that we're not longer capable of reacting with basic human compassion.

I don't endorse what Hezbolla did, but let's remember that the three people they kidnapped were in fact soldiers. These are men in uniform, who make their living by being in harm's way.

Israel has responded with massive force against a civilian population. We recoil as if walking on broken glass when we hear that Iran and Syria provide support to Hezbolla, but remember, we provide over $3,000,000,000 in annual aid to Israel. Much of this is in the form of helicopter gun ships and smart bombs.

As the Red Cross runs out of body bags in Qana, where 34 children were killed, the U.S. government pets and plays fetch with the dogs of war. Condi Rice tells the world that it is 'not yet time' for a cease fire, as if she was protecting overly eager children from taking cookies from the oven before they were done.

I just want to send a huge thank you to all of those who worked so hard to pull Jazz Fest together again this year. It is a tremendous amount of work and effort, and our whole community is the richer for it. This year we were blessed with great weather, a great lineup, and a S M O O T H running show....thanks

What is it with pet owners?

I was driving to work this morning and had to slow down four times and stop once to avoid dogs running loose on 70. This is a regular event on my numerous trips down 70 to Lebanon both in the morning and the afternoon. I just don't understand how people can let their pets run free when a very busy highway is so close. It is not just dangerous for the animals but the drivers also.

If you have pets and you let them run free...

PUT UP A FENCE

Watertown Schools-Equal Educational Opportunity?

Who here thinks that students and staff at Watertown's schools have an Educational Opportunity Equal to those of the rest of the county?

Who here think that the curriculum is fine the way it is and measures up to the needs of our students?

How do you think constructive and positive change can take place?

If the opportunity for our students and staff were the same these changes would result:

1. Poverty and it's symptoms would be greatly diminished.

2. Property values would increase dramatically.

3. Citizen morale would increase and the small town culture of complaint would disappear.

4. Churches would be revitalized, the park would blossom, volunteers for the Jazz Fest and other activities would line up.

5. The tax base, both property and sales would enable our town to improve services in too many ways to mention here.

6. The small town atmosphere would be preserved and improved rather than constantly at risk of dying and returning to the bleak days here of the 70's and 80's.

7. Merchants would thrive and stores would open or expand services.

It starts with schools, don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

And life created continents...

24 March 2006

Exclusive from New Scientist Print Edition

Myles McLeod

LIFE on Earth may have driven the evolution of the planet itself. The idea is that ancient microbes provided the chemical energy to create the Earth's continents - a nod to the Gaia hypothesis, in which life helps create the conditions it needs to survive.

The theory would solve the puzzle of why the Earth's continental crust appeared when it did, and explain the presence of granite, a substance not found anywhere else in our solar system.

The Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago, coalescing as a homogeneous mass that in time separated into the discrete layers we know today: the core, mantle and crust, plus oceans and atmosphere. However, during the first 600 to 800 million years of Earth's existence there were no stable continents. The oldest vestiges of continental crust, which date from the Archaean aeon about 4 billion years ago, are in Acasta in north-west Canada.

Catastrophic immune response may have caused drug trial horror

14:22 17 March 2006

NewScientist.com news service

Shaoni Bhattacharya and Andy Coghlan

A catastrophic over-stimulation of the immune system may have caused the horrific reactions suffered by six men taking part in the first human clinical trial of an experimental drug.

An investigation by New Scientist suggests the drug may have caused a super-immune response – sending white blood cells called T cells rampaging through the body destroying its own tissues.

Several experts contacted by New Scientist agree this is the most likely explanation for the terrible incident which put all six men in hospital intensive care in London, UK, with two in a critical condition. The victims, who were healthy, paid volunteers, are said to have suffered multiple organ failure.

Saved by 'sand' poured into the wounds

16 March 2006

From New Scientist Print Edition

Jessica Marshall

DETECTIVE Danny Johnson was on patrol outside Tampa, Florida, when a report came through of a possible shooting in a junkyard three blocks away. Arriving on the scene, he found an elderly man sitting on a tractor, with a large hole in his leg that was bleeding profusely.

Realising it would be some time before the ambulance arrived, Johnson opened a packet of sand-like material and poured it into the wound. Within seconds the bleeding had practically stopped, and the man survived. "The medic told me that had I not put the substance in there, the guy would probably have bled out and died," he says.
