Relief Effort...What went wrong?
Like most of you, I've been reading the news of the aftermath with increasing alarm and horror. If there was ever a study of a class system in the U.S., this relief effort would be a model.
I
wish that I could blame Bush for this, but that would be like blaming
Mickey Mouse for the stock price of the Disney corporation. Now,
I think that this is a long term result of our public policy codified
over the last fifty years. The relentless grab of materialism,
property, and corporate power have landed us in a pitiful pickle. In short, here is what I see:
- Corporations Rule: More than any single thing, this
has defined our public policy. Corporations have been given (only
recently by the way) the status of 'persons' in our society.
Corporations by their definition exist to return value to their
shareholders and are thus sociopathic citizens. - Class: I would venture that there has been a
distinct class system in our country right from the start. Today,
the lines are drawn very clearly and succinctly. If you don't contribute to wealth creation...you are a marginal citizen, not worthy of much attention from the better class of people.
We can each make choices every day as far as what we value, and
hold important. Is the money that you may save shopping at Walmart
worth the price that this company extracts from the community at large?
